Towing (B + E)

1st Class Driver Training offers B+E towing training by a DSA Approved Driving Instructor to companies and individuals who require the B+E category added to their licence. We have a proven track record and a high first time pass rate.

If you passed your driving test after the 1st January 1997 (including re-tests) you must pass a practical category B+E test to tow a trailer which exceeds 750kg on a vehicle weighing 3,500kg; or vehicle and trailer/caravan/horsebox combination over 3,500kg.

The standard "B" licence will allow you to tow a combination (vehicle and trailer) with a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) which does not exceed 3,500kg providing that the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle.

The B+E trailer towing test is based on the LGV driving test and lasts for approximately one hour.

The B+E test consists of the following requirements:

The ability to carry out safety checks

The reversing exercise

The braking exercise

The drive

Uncoupling and recoupling

It is important to note that whilst you must be capable of carrying out the manoeuvres and exercises with the trailer, the driving part of the test is carried out up to the LGV driving test standard, therefore assessment and training will cover on-road driving to help ensure your general driving is up to the required standard.

When deciding on a B+E towing course option it is important to be honest with yourself regarding your abilities, especially with reversing. We have a 4 day training course, we believe that this is ther best way to get experience and ability therefore increasing your chances of passing on your first attempt. Consider the extra cost involved if you require a re-test.

The majority of people who fail the B+E Test do so because their road driving skills do not meet the required standard.
