The Driving Standards Agency Theory Test is split into two parts, the multiple choice element and the Hazard Perception test.
The Multiple Choice Element.
This section of the test consists of a series of 50 multiple choice
questions covering many topics such as road and traffic signs,
rules of the road inc. motorway and safety of yourself and your vehicle.
This part of the test is taken on a touch screen computer. The aim of the
Multi Choice Element is to test your knowledge of driving, there are no
trick questions to catch you out. You will have 57 minutes to complete
the test and a 15 minute period to practice before the test. The current
pass mark is 43 out of 50.
The Hazard Perception Test (HPT).
This part of the test is used to increase your driving ability and skill to detect hazardous situations as early as possible. This element lasts for 15 minutes, and consists of 14 film clips with each clip containing 1 or more hazard, there are 15 hazards in total which means 1 of the clips has two hazards. Points are scored by the amount of time it takes you to react and click the mouse when the hazards starts to develop. The quicker you react the more points you gain. Each clip is marked out of 5. The pass mark for this element of the test is 44 out of 75, this means you need to score an average of 3 on each hazard.
You will get the results for both tests immediately after finishing your test, you need to pass both elements to pass the theory test, if you fail either you will have to take both elements again.
Various training aids are available for purchase which allow you to practice both elements of the test. Please ask Me for further details.
